This is a copy of the land grant from the War Department for 160 acres given for service in the American Revolution to my great, great, great, great grandfather in 1818. He choose Greene County, Georgia, and lived there with his wife Mary until his death in 1848. He was 85 years old. John Shaw 1763-1848

very cool. I search off and on on the Ellis Island website, looking or the ships records of my grandparents arrival there. No luck yet but we know they came through there.
I think my great grandfather obtained land this way in the Dakotas. He was the second son of an Iowa farmer so he headed off on his own to South Dakota because the first son inherited the family's land.
My mother was really into genealogy and so was my aunt.
